Water Status

Rainfall Status

The average normal rainfall in the state is 940 mm. The state receives its rainfall both from the South-West (SW) and North East (NE) monsoons. The SW monsoon usually begins from early June and lasts until about the end of September. The NE monsoon is active between October and December. The maximum annual precipitation received from the South-West monsoon was 481 mm in 2004-05 and 598 mm in 2003-04. The maximum rainfall received from North East monsoon was 133mm in 2004-05 and 218mm in 2003-04. There is also a wide variation of the rainfall between the different districts of the state. The six north coastal districts and three north Telengana districts receive more than 1,000mm per annum, while the districts of Kurnool, Anantapur and Kadapa register scanty rainfall which is below 700mm. In AP, the incidence of rainfall in South West monsoon accounts for more than 60 % of the annual rainfall. The rainfall for the past six years i.e. from 2001-02 to 2005-06 is presented in the table below.

Rainfall Distribution

The total estimated quantity of water received by Andhra Pradesh through its normal annual rainfall of 940 mm is 24.4 mham. However, due to frequent failure of rainfall this potential is seldom achieved. In the last 10 years, we received deficient rainfall for four years by at least 10 percent and only one year received excess rainfall. The rainfall received since 1998 to 2009 is given in the table below.

Reservoir Status

Reservoir Storage Monitoring System (RSMS)

Ready up-to-date and regular availability of information is critical for attaining efficient water planning and management. The Reservoir Storage Monitoring System-is a web based software application developed by the I&CAD with technical support from CGG to monitor water storage levels in reservoirs in all Major and Medium projects in the state. This system enables routine collection, analysis and communication of information of respective reservoir storage levels, inflows and outflows, water release database of water status to select individuals to streamline and facilitate easy decision making process, encourage transparency and eliminate adhoc releases. In this system, information about reservoir water status, is received daily once at a pre-defined time through SMS from respective designated engineers from the field to a data base in the website where the same is analysed and disseminated to designated engineers, administrators and policy makers through automated SMS /Fax at a pre-defined time and also made accessible to public on request through the website and through SMS.The RSMS information (on seven preselected parameters) is sent daily (hourly in emergencies like floods and droughts) covering 17 Major irrigation projects located in the Krishna, Godavari, and Pennar River by fax (almost 37 people) and through SMS (almost 33 people).

Canal Flow Status

Canal Network Flow Monitoring System:

Canal Network Flow Monitoring System-a mobile-cum-web based system that provides information on water flow in canal network covering 18 major irrigation projects located in Krishna, Godavari and Pennar river basins to concerned officials and Project Committee is designed to identify water releases against the design discharge and planned discharges for facilitating optimum utilization of water. The CNFMS-consisting of a central data base unit and a mobile phone connection captures static information regarding projects and canals like design discharge at off take points of distributaries, cross regulators in main canal and water release data from designated mobiles at regular intervals, sends it to designated field engineers and also stores it in central database server. Outputs and reports generated for different users by the pre-programmed application are texted through SMS or faxed automatically to the office bearers of FOs for reviewing daily water release status and effecting appropriate planning at their level. The CNFMS system that analyses data in the form of charts / graphs for collating individual information and projecting trends is made available to policy makers, bureaucrats, technocrats, and FOs daily through SMS at 10.30 am and presently helps in covering and monitoring almost 67 lakh acres command area in the state.
